Good day, all! We hope you’re doing great wherever you are. Thursday is blog day, and today I’m going to share with you a very easy recipe for a smoothie that Banjo the orangutan simply loves. You may have already seen our previous recipes for my favorite giant cookies and Imani’s grandmother’s health muffins? Well, here’s another recipe to add to your collection written by me, Sasha the tooth-fairy. Of course, this smoothie is best made with fresh ingredients when they’re in season. Dates are mostly exported from Egypt, the Middle East, West Asia and Northern Africa, so they can be found in most stores all year round. Bananas are a tropical fruit grown in tropical areas like Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean, and the Pacific. They are exported to countries that don’t offer the type of climate that bananas thrive in, which means they are also usually readily available in most parts of the world. Strawberries are a little more difficult to find. Even in the countries with favorable climates, they only really flourish at a certain time during the year – summer. If you can’t find strawberries for your recipe, rather just use the dates and the bananas. You could add strawberry-jelly or tinned-strawberries, but the beauty of this recipe is that everything in it should be as fresh as possible. Banjo’s Mama is able to make these smoothies for him quite often, because in Indonesia they have all the ingredients available throughout the year (bar the strawberries). Banjo agrees that just one smoothie gives him enough energy to move around and play for at least half a day, and the health benefits are amazing, too! So, especially for you, here’s Banjo’s favorite smoothie recipe (keep in mind these ingredients are enough to make around 850ml or roughly three cups of smoothie): What you’ll need: 2 x medium to large ripe bananas (there should be no green coloring on the skin at all) 9 x medium-sized ripe strawberries 12 x pitted dates (pitted means the ‘stone’ or ‘pip’ has been removed) 750ml (or two-and-a-half cups) low-fat plain yogurt 3 x tablespoons of honey An electric blender or hand-held electric blender *A medium-sized, deep, bowl if you’re working with a hand-held electric blender Another medium-sized deep bowl for mixing your ingredients together thoroughly A plastic spatula 3 x large drinking glasses How to make your smoothie: 1 ~ peel your bananas then cut them in half. 2 ~ wash your strawberries then cut the green-leaf tops from them. 3 ~ place your dates into your blender or a medium-sized, deep, bowl if you’re using a hand-held electric blender. 4 ~ blend the dates to as much of a pulp as you can – you will likely be left with a thick and sticky, toffee-like mass; don’t worry, they will become softer as you add your other ingredients. 5 ~ add your bananas and strawberries to your date pulp. Keep your blender on medium-low so that they do not get mushed to juice! Together your ingredients should be the same consistency as thick yogurt. 6 ~ using a plastic spatula - scrape your date-strawberry-banana pulp into your second mixing bowl. 7 ~ pour the yogurt into the fruit pulp, using your spatula to gently combine the yogurt and pulp together. 8 ~ once all of the yogurt has been added, add the honey to your mix. 9 ~ using your spatula again, gently combine all of the ingredients together in a folding motion until your mix is the same color throughout, with no streaks of pulp or honey showing. 10 ~ pour your delicious smoothie mix into the three glasses, making sure they’re equally full so that no one complains about getting less than the other! (Hah!) And there you have it; Banjo’s favorite Date, Banana, and Strawberry Smoothie recipe. This is a super alternative to fizzy soda-pops and can actually serve as part of a healthy breakfast, midday meal, or even as a dessert after dinner! But if you’d like one as a ‘just-because’ snack, that’s okay, too! If you get to make this smoothie soon, we’d love to hear how it turned out for you.
