Ten Alternatives to Sugar

Happy Saturday, all!

One question we do get asked a lot is, "What are the alternatives to using sugar in recipes for sweet treats?" Before we list these alternatives, we thought you might like to know the reasons why certain body types prefer, or actually require, alternatives to sugar - with 'tooth decay' being one of them.

Reasons why people might consider limiting or avoiding sugar:

  • Weight Gain - Excess sugar can lead to calorie surplus, contributing to obesity.
  • Type 2 Diabetes Risk - High sugar intake may increase insulin resistance over time.
  • Dental Health - Sugar feeds bacteria in the mouth, causing cavities and tooth decay.
  • Heart Disease - Excessive consumption is linked to higher triglycerides and heart issues.
  • Inflammation - Sugar can promote chronic inflammation, worsening conditions like arthritis.
  • Energy Crashes - Quick spikes and drops in blood sugar can cause fatigue and irritability.
  • Liver Strain - Overload of fructose (e.g. from high-fructose corn syrup) can lead to fatty liver disease.

With these reasons in mind, here are some common alternatives to sugar as sweeteners:

  1. Honey - Natural sweetener with antioxidants; sweeter than sugar, so use less.
  2. Maple Syrup - Natural, contains minerals like zinc; best in moderation due to high fructose.
  3. Stevia - Plant-based, zero-calorie sweetener; no impact on blood sugar.
  4. Monk Fruit Sweetener - Zero-calorie, natural extract; no aftertaste for many.
  5. Agave Nectar - Sweeter than sugar, lower glycemic index; high in fructose, so use sparingly.
  6. Coconut Sugar - Contains trace nutrients; similar glycemic index to sugar.
  7. Erythritol - Sugar alcohol, zero-calorie, minimal digestive impact.
  8. Xylitol - Sugar alcohol, low-calorie, dental-friendly; toxic to dogs.
  9. Aspartame - Artificial, low-calorie; not suitable for high-heat cooking or PKU patients.
  10. Sucralose - Artificial, zero-calorie; heat-stable but may affect gut health.

Each has pros and cons depending on health goals, taste preferences, and dietary needs (e.g. diabetic-friendly or natural). For specific uses like baking or beverages, always check compatibility, as some alter texture or flavor.

If your kids love baking and cooking, take a look through Dr. Rose's blogs to find some awesome recipes for sweet treats that you can enjoy without worrying too much about hurting your teeth or health.
